கர்த்தரை நோக்கி விண்ணப்பம்பண்ணி: ஆ கர்த்தாவே, நான் என் தேசத்தில் இருக்கும்போதே நான் இதைச் சொல்லவில்லையா? இதினிமித்தமே நான் முன்னமே தர்ஷீசுக்கு ஓடிப்போனேன்; நீர் இரக்கமும் மன உருக்கமும் நீடியசாந்தமும் மிகுந்த கிருபையுமுள்ளவரும், தீங்குக்கு மனஸ்தாபப்படுகிறவருமான தேவனென்று அறிவேன்.

கர்த்தரை நோக்கி விண்ணப்பம்செய்து: ஆ கர்த்தாவே, நான் என் தேசத்தில் இருக்கும்போதே நான் இதைச் சொல்லவில்லையா? இதினாலேயே நான் முன்னமே தர்ஷீசுக்கு ஓடிப்போனேன்; நீர் இரக்கமும் மன உருக்கமும் நீடிய சாந்தமும் மிகுந்த கிருபையுமுள்ளவரும், தீங்கிற்கு மனமிரங்குகிறவருமான தேவனென்று அறிவேன்.

யோனா கர்த்தரிடம் முறையிட்டு, “நான் இது நடக்குமென்று அறிவேன்! நான் எனது சொந்த நாட்டில் இருந்தேன். நீர் என்னை இங்கு வரச்சொன்னீர். அந்த நேரத்தில், இப்பாவ நகரத்திலுள்ள மக்களை நீர் மன்னிப்பீர் என்பதை நான் அறிவேன். எனவே நான் தர்ஷிசுக்கு ஓடிப்போக முடிவுசெய்தேன். நீர் இரக்கமுள்ள தேவன் என்பது எனக்குத் தெரியும்! நீர் இரக்கங்காட்டி மக்களைத் தண்டிக்கமாட்டீர் என்பதை நான் அறிவேன்! நீர் கருணை நிறைந்தவர் என்பதை அறிவேன். இம்மக்கள் பாவம் செய்வதை நிறுத்தினால், நீர் அவர்களை அழிக்கவேண்டும் என்னும் திட்டத்தை மாற்றிக்கொள்வீர் என்றும் நான் அறிவேன்.

“ஆண்டவரே, நான் என் ஊரை விட்டுப் புறப்படுமுன்பே இதைத்தானே சொன்னேன்? இதை முன்னிட்டே நான் தர்சீசுக்கு ஓடிப்போக முயன்றேன். நீர் கனிவு மிக்கவர், இரக்கமுள்ளவர், மிகுந்த பொறுமையும் அளவிலா அன்பும் உள்ள கடவுள் என்பது எனக்குத் தெரியும். அழிக்க நினைப்பீர்; பிறகு உம் மனத்தை மாற்றிக் கொள்வீர் என்பதும் எனக்கு அப்போதே தெரியும்.
