அந்த ஸ்தலத்திற்குப் பெத்தேல் என்று பேரிட்டான்; அதற்கு முன்னே அவ்வூருக்கு லுூஸ் என்னும் பேர் இருந்தது.

யாக்கோபும் அவனோடேகூட இருந்த எல்லா ஜனங்களும் கானான் தேசத்திலுள்ள பெத்தேல் என்னும் லுூசுக்கு வந்தார்கள்.

யாக்கோபு யோசேப்பை நோக்கி: சர்வவல்லமையுள்ள தேவன் கானான் தேசத்திலுள்ள லுூஸ் என்னும் இடத்தில் எனக்குத் தரிசனமாகி, என்னை ஆசீர்வதித்து:

நூனின் குமாரனாகிய யோசுவா சித்தீமிலிருந்து வேவுகாரராகிய இரண்டு மனுஷரை இரகசியமாய் வேவுபார்க்கும்படி அனுப்பி: நீங்கள் போய் தேசத்தையும் எரிகோவையும் பார்த்துவாருங்கள் என்றான். அவர்கள் போய், ராகாப் என்னும் பெயர்கொண்ட வேசியின் வீட்டுக்குள் பிரவேசித்து, அங்கே தங்கினார்கள்.

யோசுவா எரிகோவிலிருந்து பெத்தேலுக்குக் கிழக்கிலுள்ள பெத்தாவேன் சமீபத்திலிருக்கிற ஆயிபட்டணத்துக்குப் போகும்படி ஆட்களை அனுப்பி: நீங்கள் போய், அந்த நாட்டை வேவுபாருங்கள் என்றான்; அந்த மனுஷர் போய்; ஆயியை வேவுபார்த்து,

ஆகையால் தேசத்தை உளவுபார்த்து வரும்படி, தாண் புத்திரர் தங்கள் கோத்திரத்திலே பலத்த மனுஷராகிய ஐந்து பேரைத் தங்கள் எல்லைகளில் இருக்கிற சோராவிலும் எஸ்தாவோலிலுமிருந்து அனுப்பி: நீங்கள் போய், தேசத்தை ஆராய்ந்துபார்த்து வாருங்கள் என்று அவர்களோடே சொன்னார்கள்; அவர்கள் எப்பிராயீம் மலைத்தேசத்தில் இருக்கிற மீகாவின் வீடுமட்டும் போய், அங்கே இராத்தங்கினார்கள்.
