Ezra 6
1 ਦਾਰਾ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਤਾਂ ਫਿਰ ਦਾਰਾ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਰਾਜਿਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਲਿਖਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੜਤਾਲ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ। ਉਹ ਲਿਖਤਾਂ ਬਾਬਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਖਜਾਨੇ ਕੋਲ ਹੀ ਰੱਖੀਆਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ।
2 ਮਾਦਈ ਦੇ ਸੂਬੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਹਮਬਾ ਦੇ ਕਿਲੇ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਪੱਤ੍ਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਈ। ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਪੱਤ੍ਰੀ ਤੇ ਇਹ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ: ਨੋਟ:
3 ਕੋਰਸ਼ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੇ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਵਰ੍ਹੇ ਕੋਰਸ਼ ਨੇ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੇ ਮੰਦਰ ਬਾਰੇ ਜੋ ਯਰੂਸ਼ਲਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ ਆਗਿਆ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਕਿ: ਮੰਦਰ ਦੀ ਫਿਰ ਤੋਂ ਉਸਾਰੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਵੇ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਉਹ ਜਗ੍ਹਾਂ ਹੋਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਬਲੀਆਂ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਈਅਮਾਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਇਸਦੀਆਂ ਨੀਹਾਂ ਮਜਬੂਤ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਜਾਣ। ਇਹ ਮੰਦਰ 90 ਫੁੱਟ ਉੱਚਾ ਅਤੇ 90 ਫੁੱਟ ਚੌੜਾ ਹੋਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ।
4 ਇਸਦੀ ਚੋਗਿਰਦੀ ਦੀਵਾਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਵੱਡੇ ਪੱਥਰ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਤਿੰਨ ਕਤਾਰਾਂ ਹੋਣੀਆਂ ਚਾਹੀਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਕਤਾਰ ਵੱਡੀ ਗੇਲੀ ਦੀ ਅਤੇ ਮੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਨਿਰਮਾਣ ਦਾ ਖਰਚਾ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੇ ਖਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਭੇਂਟ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਵੇ।
5 ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੇ ਮੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਸੋਨੇ ਅਤੇ ਚਾਂਦੀ ਦੇ ਭਾਂਡੇ ਵੀ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਬੂਕਦਨੱਸਰ ਉਸ ਮੰਦਰ ਤੋਂ ਜੋ ਯਰੂਸ਼ਲਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ, ਕੱਢ ਕੇ ਬਾਬਲ ਨੂੰ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ਸੀ, ਮੋੜ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਜਾਣ ਅਤੇ ਯਰੂਸ਼ਲਮ ਦੇ ਮੰਦਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣੇ ਥਾਂ ਪਹੁੰਚਾਏ ਜਾਣ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੇ ਮੰਦਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਜਾਵੇ।
6 ਹੁਣ, ਮੈਂ ਦਾਰਾ, ਫਰਾਤ ਦਰਿਆ ਦੇ ਪੱਛਮੀ ਪਾਸੇ ਦੇ ਰਾਜਪਾਲ, ਤਤਨਈ, ਸ਼ਬਰ ਬੋਜ਼ਨਈ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ, ਜਿਹੜੇ ਉਸ ਸੂਬੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਯਰੂਸ਼ਲਮ ਤੋਂ ਦੂਰ ਰਹਿਣ ਦਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ।
7 ਮਜ਼ਦੂਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਨਾ ਕਰੋ ਤੇ ਨਾ ਹੀ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੇ ਮੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਇਸ ਨੇਕ ਕੰਮ ਨੂੰ ਰੋਕਣ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰੋ। ਇਸ ਦੀ ਬਜਾਇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੁਬਾਰਾ ਯਹੂਦੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਜਪਾਲ ਅਤੇ ਯਹੂਦੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਆਗੂਆਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਆਪਣੀ ਪੱਕੀ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਤੇ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਜਾਣ ਦਿਓ।
8 ਹੁਣ ਮੈਂ ਇਹ ਹੁਕਮ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੇ ਇਸ ਮੰਦਰ ਨੂੰ ਬਨਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਯਹੂਦੀ ਆਗੂਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਕੀ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੈ। ਤੁਸੀਂ ਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਖਜ਼ਾਨੇ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਪੂਰਾ ਧੰਨ ਦਿਓ ਜੋ ਕਿ ਫਰਾਤ ਦਰਿਆ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਇੱਕਤ੍ਰ ਕੀਤੇ ਕਰ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੰਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੁਕਾਵਟ ਨਾ ਪਵੇ।
9 ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਦਿਓ ਜੋ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। ਜੇਕਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਵਾਨ ਬਲਦ, ਭੇਡੂ ਜਾਂ ਲੇਲੇ ਅਕਾਸ਼ ਦੇ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਨੂੰ ਬਲੀਆਂ ਚਾਢ਼ਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਚਾਹੀਦੇ ਹੋਣ। ਅਤੇ ਜਿੰਨੀ ਕਣਕ, ਲੂਣ ਮੈਅ ਅਤੇ ਤੇਲ, ਜੋ ਯਰੂਸ਼ਲਮ ਵਿੱਚਲੇ ਜਾਜਕ ਮੰਗਣ ਬਿਨ ਭੁਲਿਆਂ ਉੱਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
10 ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਉਹ ਉਹੀ ਬਲੀਆਂ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਉਣ ਜੋ ਅਕਾਸ਼ ਦੇ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਕਰ ਦੇਣ। ਇਹ ਸਭ ਚੀਜ਼ਾਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਿੱਤੀਆਂ ਜਾਣੀਆਂ ਚਾਹੀਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਉਹ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਪੁੱਤਰਾਂ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰਾਰਥਨਾ ਕਰ ਸੱਕਣ।
11 ਮੈਂ ਇਹ ਆਗਿਆ ਵੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਜੋ ਕੋਈ ਇਸ ਆਗਿਆ ਨੂੰ ਬਦਲੇ, ਉਸ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਹੀ ਇੱਕ ਸ਼ਤੀਰੀ ਕੱਢੀ ਜਾਵੇ ਅਤੇ ਖੜੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਵੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਆਦਮੀ ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਖੋਭਿਆ ਜਾਵੇ ਤੇ ਆਖੀਰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਘਰ ਨੂੰ ਨਸ਼ਟ ਕਰਕੇ ਖੰਡਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਵੇ।
12 ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਂ ਯਰੂਸ਼ਲਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਸ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਰਾਜਾ ਜਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਜੋ ਇਸ ਆਦੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਬਦਲੇਗਾ, ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹਰਾਇਆ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ। ਜੇਕਰ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਯਰੂਸ਼ਲਮ ਵਿੱਚਲੇ ਇਸ ਮੰਦਰ ਨੂੰ ਢਾਹੇਗਾ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਯਕੀਨ ਹੈ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਤਬਾਹ ਕਰ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ। ਮੈਂ, ਦਾਰਾ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਆਦੇਸ਼ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਇੰਝ ਹੀ ਲਾਗੂ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
13 ਮੰਦਰ ਦਾ ਮੁਕੰਮਲ ਹੋਣਾ ਅਤੇ ਸਮਰਪਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਣਾ ਇਉਂ ਦਰਿਆ ਤੋਂ ਪਾਰ ਦੇ ਹਾਕਮ ਤਤਨਈ, ਸ਼ਬਰ ਬੋਜਨਈ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਾਥੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਦਾਰਾ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੀ ਭੇਜੀ ਹੋਈ ਆਗਿਆ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਸਭ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਮਨੁੱਖਾਂ ਨੇ ਉਸਦਾ ਪੂਰਾ-ਪੂਰਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਮਂਨਿਆਂ ਤੇ ਕਾਰਜ ਸੰਪੰਨ ਕੀਤਾ।
14 ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ, ਯਹੂਦੀ ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗ ਮੰਦਰ ਦੀ ਉਸਾਰੀ ਕਰਦੇ ਰਹੇ ਅਤੇ ਉਹ ਹੱਗਈ ਨਬੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਦ੍ਦੇ ਦੇ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਜ਼ਕਰਯਾਹ ਦੇ ਅਗੰਮ ਵਾਕ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਸਫਲ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਰਹੇ ਅਤੇ ਇਉਂ ਉਹ ਮੰਦਰ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਕੰਮਲ ਕਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਾਮਯਹਬ ਰਹੇ। ਇਹ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਇਸਰਾਏਲ ਦੇ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਨੂੰ ਅਤੇ ਕੋਰਸ਼, ਦਾਰਾ ਅਤੇ ਅਰਤਹਸ਼ਸਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਆਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਨਣ ਲਈ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ ਜੋ ਕਿ ਫਾਰਸ ਦੇ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਸਨ।
15 ਮੰਦਰ ਦਾ ਕਾਰਜ਼ ਅਦਾਰ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਦੇ ਤੀਜੇ ਦਿਨ, ਦਾਰਾ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਦੇ ਰਾਜ ਦੇ 6ਵੇਂ ਵਰ੍ਹੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੰਪੰਨ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ।
16 ਫਿਰ ਇਸਰਾਏਲ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ, ਜਾਜਕਾਂ, ਲੇਵੀਆਂ, ਬਾਕੀ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਜੋ ਦੇਸ਼ ਨਿਕਾਲੇ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਪਸ ਆਏ ਸਨ, ਬੜੀ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੇ ਮੰਦਰ ਦੀ ਚੱਠ ਕੀਤੀ।
17 ਇਸ ਲਈ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੇ ਇਸ ਮੰਦਰ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਮਰਪਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ: ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ 100 ਬਲਦ 200 ਭੇਡੂ ਅਤੇ 400 ਲੇਲੇ ਭੇਟ ਕੀਤੇ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਪਾਪ ਦੀ ਭੇਟ ਵਜੋਂ ਇਸਰਾਏਲ ਦੇ ਵੰਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਮੁਤਾਬਕ ਬਾਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੱਕਰੀਆਂ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਈਆਂ।
18 ਜਿਵੇਂ ਮੂਸਾ ਦੀ ਪੋਥੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਵੇਂ ਹੀ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਜਾਜਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਟੋਲਿਆਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਲੇਵੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਟੋਲਿਆਂ ਮੁਤਾਬਕ ਯਰੂਸ਼ਲਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੀ ਉਪਾਸਨਾ ਲਈ ਚੁਣਿਆ।
19 ਪਸਹ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਮਹੀਨੇ 4 ਦੀ ਚੌਦਾਂ ਤਾਰੀਕ ਨੂੰ ਉਹ ਯਹੂਦੀ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਕੈਦ ਤੋਂ ਵਾਪਸ ਪਰਤੇ ਸਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਪਸਹ ਦਾ ਪਰਬ ਮਨਾਇਆ।
20 ਜਾਜਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਲੇਵੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ-ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ੁੱਧ ਕੀਤਾ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਭਨਾ ਨੇ ਪਸਹ ਮਨਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਆਪਣੇ-ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਫ ਕੀਤਾ। ਲੇਵੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਬੰਦੀਆਂ ਲਈ ਪਸਹ ਦਾ ਲੇਲਾ ਜਿਬਹ ਕੀਤਾ ਜੋ ਵਾਪਸ ਪਰਤੇ ਸਨ। ਇਹ ਸਭ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਹ-ਜਾਜਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਲਈ ਕੀਤਾ।
21 ਇੰਝ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਇਸਰਾਏਲੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਕੈਦ ਤੋਂ ਪਰਤੇ ਸਨ ਪਸਹ ਦਾ ਭੋਜਨ ਖਾਧਾ। ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਭ ਨੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ-ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਇਸ ਧਰਤੀ ਦੀਆਂ ਹੋਰਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਨਾਪਾਕ ਚੀਜਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਸ਼ੁੱਧ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਸੀ, ਜੋ ਕਿ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ, ਇਸਰਾਏਲ ਦੇ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦੀ ਤਲਾਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਨ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਆਪਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਾਂਝਾ ਕੀਤਾ।
22 ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਨੰਦ ਨਾਲ ਸੱਤ ਦਿਨ ਪਤੀਰੀ ਰੋਟੀ ਦਾ ਪਰਬ ਮਨਾਇਆ ਕਿਉਂ ਕਿ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਖੁਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਅੱਸ਼ੂਰ ਦੇ ਪਾਤਸਾਹ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਫ਼ੇਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਸੀ। ਇਸ ਲਈ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਨੇ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਦਾ ਮੰਦਰ ਬਨਾਉਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਦਦ ਕੀਤੀ।
1 Then Darius the king made a decree, and search was made in the house of the rolls, where the treasures were laid up in Babylon.
2 And there was found at Achmetha, in the palace that is in the province of the Medes, a roll, and therein was a record thus written:
3 In the first year of Cyrus the king the same Cyrus the king made a decree concerning the house of God at Jerusalem, Let the house be builded, the place where they offered sacrifices, and let the foundations thereof be strongly laid; the height thereof threescore cubits, and the breadth thereof threescore cubits;
4 With three rows of great stones, and a row of new timber: and let the expences be given out of the king’s house:
5 And also let the golden and silver vessels of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took forth out of the temple which is at Jerusalem, and brought unto Babylon, be restored, and brought again unto the temple which is at Jerusalem, every one to his place, and place them in the house of God.
6 Now therefore, Tatnai, governor beyond the river, Shethar-boznai, and your companions the Apharsachites, which are beyond the river, be ye far from thence:
7 Let the work of this house of God alone; let the governor of the Jews and the elders of the Jews build this house of God in his place.
8 Moreover I make a decree what ye shall do to the elders of these Jews for the building of this house of God: that of the king’s goods, even of the tribute beyond the river, forthwith expences be given unto these men, that they be not hindered.
9 And that which they have need of, both young bullocks, and rams, and lambs, for the burnt offerings of the God of heaven, wheat, salt, wine, and oil, according to the appointment of the priests which are at Jerusalem, let it be given them day by day without fail:
10 That they may offer sacrifices of sweet savours unto the God of heaven, and pray for the life of the king, and of his sons.
11 Also I have made a decree, that whosoever shall alter this word, let timber be pulled down from his house, and being set up, let him be hanged thereon; and let his house be made a dunghill for this.
12 And the God that hath caused his name to dwell there destroy all kings and people, that shall put to their hand to alter and to destroy this house of God which is at Jerusalem. I Darius have made a decree; let it be done with speed.
13 Then Tatnai, governor on this side the river, Shethar-boznai, and their companions, according to that which Darius the king had sent, so they did speedily.
14 And the elders of the Jews builded, and they prospered through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo. And they builded, and finished it, according to the commandment of the God of Israel, and according to the commandment of Cyrus, and Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia.
15 And this house was finished on the third day of the month Adar, which was in the sixth year of the reign of Darius the king.
16 And the children of Israel, the priests, and the Levites, and the rest of the children of the captivity, kept the dedication of this house of God with joy,
17 And offered at the dedication of this house of God an hundred bullocks, two hundred rams, four hundred lambs; and for a sin offering for all Israel, twelve he goats, according to the number of the tribes of Israel.
18 And they set the priests in their divisions, and the Levites in their courses, for the service of God, which is at Jerusalem; as it is written in the book of Moses.
19 And the children of the captivity kept the passover upon the fourteenth day of the first month.
20 For the priests and the Levites were purified together, all of them were pure, and killed the passover for all the children of the captivity, and for their brethren the priests, and for themselves.
21 And the children of Israel, which were come again out of captivity, and all such as had separated themselves unto them from the filthiness of the heathen of the land, to seek the Lord God of Israel, did eat,
22 And kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with joy: for the Lord had made them joyful, and turned the heart of the king of Assyria unto them, to strengthen their hands in the work of the house of God, the God of Israel.
1 When Mordecai perceived all that was done, Mordecai rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and cried with a loud and a bitter cry;
2 And came even before the king’s gate: for none might enter into the king’s gate clothed with sackcloth.
3 And in every province, whithersoever the king’s commandment and his decree came, there was great mourning among the Jews, and fasting, and weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.
4 So Esther’s maids and her chamberlains came and told it her. Then was the queen exceedingly grieved; and she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai, and to take away his sackcloth from him: but he received it not.
5 Then called Esther for Hatach, one of the king’s chamberlains, whom he had appointed to attend upon her, and gave him a commandment to Mordecai, to know what it was, and why it was.
6 So Hatach went forth to Mordecai unto the street of the city, which was before the king’s gate.
7 And Mordecai told him of all that had happened unto him, and of the sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king’s treasuries for the Jews, to destroy them.
8 Also he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given at Shushan to destroy them, to shew it unto Esther, and to declare it unto her, and to charge her that she should go in unto the king, to make supplication unto him, and to make request before him for her people.
9 And Hatach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai.
10 Again Esther spake unto Hatach, and gave him commandment unto Mordecai;
11 All the king’s servants, and the people of the king’s provinces, do know, that whosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law of his to put him to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.
12 And they told to Mordecai Esther’s words.
13 Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther, Think not with thyself that thou shalt escape in the king’s house, more than all the Jews.
14 For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall there enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place; but thou and thy father’s house shall be destroyed: and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?
15 Then Esther bade them return Mordecai this answer,
16 Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.
17 So Mordecai went his way, and did according to all that Esther had commanded him.
