And the time drew nigh that Israel must die: and he called his son Joseph, and said unto him, If now I have found grace in your sight, put, I pray you, your hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me; bury me not, I pray you, in Egypt:

இஸ்ரவேல் மரணமடையும் காலம் நெருங்கியது. அப்பொழுது அவன் தன் மகனாகிய யோசேப்பை வரவழைத்து, அவனை நோக்கி: என்மேல் உனக்குத் தயவுண்டானால், உன் கையை என் தொடையின்கீழ் வைத்து எனக்கு நம்பிக்கையும் உண்மையுமுள்ளவனாயிரு; என்னை எகிப்திலே அடக்கம் செய்யாதிருப்பாயாக.

தான் விரைவில் மரித்துப் போவேன் என்று இஸ்ரவேலுக்குத் (யாக்கோபு) தெரிந்தது. அவன் யோசேப்பை அழைத்து அவனிடம்: “நீ என்னை நேசித்தால், உன் கையை என் தொடையின் கீழ் வைத்து ஒரு வாக்குறுதியைச் செய். நான் சொல்வதை நீ செய்யவேண்டும். எனக்கு உண்மையாக இருக்கவேண்டும். நான் மரித்தால் என்னை எகிப்தில் அடக்கம் செய்யவேண்டாம்.
