ਤਦ ਰਹਬੁਆਮ ਪਾਤਸ਼ਾਹ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਬੜੇ ਕਮੀਨੇਪਨ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲ ਕੀਤੀ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗਾਂ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਦਾ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਨਾ ਮੰਨਿਆ।

ਯੂਸੁਫ਼ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਭਰਾਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖਿਆ। ਯੂਸੁਫ਼ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ ਲਿਆ ਪਰ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਵਿਹਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹੀ ਨਾ ਹੋਵੇ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਉਹ ਬੜਾ ਕੁਰੱਖਤ ਸੀ। ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਖਿਆ, “ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿੱਥੋਂ ਆਏ ਹੋ?” ਭਰਾਵਾਂ ਨੇ ਜਵਾਬ ਦਿੱਤਾ, “ਅਸੀਂ ਕਨਾਨ ਦੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਆਏ ਹਾਂ। ਅਸੀਂ ਇੱਥੇ ਅਨਾਜ ਖਰੀਦਣ ਆਏ ਹਾਂ।”

ਪਰ ਰਹਬੁਆਮ ਨੇ ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਤ ਨੂੰ ਸਵੀਕਾਰ ਨਾ ਕੀਤਾ। ਫ਼ਿਰ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਉਮਰ ਦੇ ਜੁਆਨਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਸ਼ਵਰਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਵੱਡੇ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਸਨ।
