ਸ਼ਾਊਲ ਨੇ ਦਾਊਦ ਦਾ ਪਿੱਛਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਦਾਊਦ ਉਜਾੜ ਵੱਲ ਗਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਉੱਥੇ ਪਕਿਆ ਕਿਲ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾਕੇ ਰਿਹਾ। ਦਾਊਦ ਉਜਾੜ ਦੇ ਪਹਾੜੀ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਜ਼ੀਫ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਜਾਕੇ ਰਿਹਾ। ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਸ਼ਾਊਲ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਲਦਾ ਪਰ ਯਹੋਵਾਹ ਨੇ ਦਾਊਦ ਨੂੰ ਸ਼ਾਊਲ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ ਨਾ ਲੱਗਣ ਦਿੱਤਾ।

ਦਾਊਦ ਦਾ ਫ਼ਲਿਸਤੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਪਰ ਦਾਊਦ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੋਚਿਆ, “ਸ਼ਾਊਲ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਿਨ ਫ਼ੜੇਗਾ ਜ਼ਰੂਰ। ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਚੰਗਾ ਤਾਂ ਇਹੀ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਫ਼ਲਿਸਤੀ ਦੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੀ ਬਚਕੇ ਨਿਕਲ ਜਾਵਾਂ। ਤਦ ਸ਼ਾਊਲ ਇਸਰਾਏਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੇਰੀ ਭਾਲ ਛੱਡ ਦੇਵੇਗਾ। ਇਉਂ ਮੈਂ ਸ਼ਾਊਲ ਦੇ ਹੱਥੋਂ ਬੱਚ ਜਾਵਾਂਗਾ।”

ਲੋਕਾਂ ਨੇ ਸ਼ਾਊਲ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਦਾਊਦ ਇਸ ਵਕਤ ਕਈਲਾਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ। ਤਾਂ ਸ਼ਾਊਲ ਬੋਲਿਆ, “ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ੁਰ ਨੇ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਹੁਣ ਮੇਰੇ ਹੱਥ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ! ਉਸ ਨੇ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ-ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਫ਼ਸਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ। ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਸ਼ਹਿਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਿਸਦੇ ਬੂਹੇ ਅਤੇ ਸਲਾਖਾਂ ਹਨ, ਉਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਬੰਦ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।”
