ଯୋହନଙ୍କ ଶିଷ୍ଯ ଓ ଫାରୂଶୀମାନେ ଉପବାସ କରୁଥଲେ। କେତକେ ଲୋକ ଯୀଶୁଙ୍କ ପାଖକୁ ଆସି କହିଲେ, ଯୋହନଙ୍କ ଶିଷ୍ଯମାନେ ଉପବାସ କରୁଛନ୍ତି, କିନ୍ତୁ ତୁମ୍ଭର ଶିଷ୍ଯମାନେ କାହିଁକି ଉପବାସ କରୁ ନାହାଁନ୍ତି?

ତା' ହେଲେ ତୁମ୍ଭେ ଉପବାସ କରୁଛ ବୋଲି ଲୋକେ ଜାଣି ପାରିବେ ନାହିଁ। ତୁମ୍ଭର ପରମପିତାଙ୍କୁ ତୁମ୍ଭେ ସିନା ଦେଖି ପାରୁନାହଁ, ମାତ୍ର ସେ ତୁମ୍ଭକୁ ଉପବାସ କରୁଥିବାର ଦେଖିବେ। କାରଣ ଗୋପନ ରେ କରାଯାଇଥିବା କାମଗୁଡିକୁ ପରମପିତା ଦେଖନ୍ତି। ସେ ତୁମ୍ଭକୁ ତାର ପ୍ରତିଫଳ ଦବେେ।

ମୁଁ ଜଣେ ଭଲ ଲୋକ। ମୁଁ ସପ୍ତାହ ରେ ଦୁଇ ଥର ଉପବାସ କରେ। ମୁଁ ମାରେସମସ୍ତ ରୋଜଗାରର ଦଶ ଭାଗରୁ ଏକ ଭାଗ ଦାନ କରେ।'
