Jeremiah 2

1 ଆଉ ସଦାପ୍ରଭୁଙ୍କର ବାକ୍ଯ ଯିରିମିୟଙ୍କ ନିକଟରେ ଉପସ୍ଥିତ ହେଲା। ଯଥା :

2 ହେ ଯିରିମିୟ, ୟାଅ, ୟିରୁଶାଲମର କର୍ଣ୍ଣଗୋଚର ହେଲାଭଳି ପ୍ରଚାର କରି ଏହିକଥା କୁହ,

3 ସଦାପ୍ରଭୁଙ୍କ ଦୃଷ୍ଟି ରେ ଇଶ୍ରାୟେଲର ଲୋକମାନେ ପବିତ୍ର। ସମାନେେ ସଦାପ୍ରଭୁଙ୍କର ପ୍ରଥମ ସଂଗୃହିତ ଫଳ। ଯେଉଁମାନେ ସମାନଙ୍କେୁ ଗ୍ରାସ କରନ୍ତି ସମାନେେ ଦୋଷୀ ଗଣାଯିବେ ଓ ସମାନଙ୍କେ ପ୍ରତି ଅମଙ୍ଗଳ ଘଟିବ।' ଏହା ସଦାପ୍ରଭୁ କହନ୍ତି

4 ହେ ଯାକୁବର ବଂଶ, ଆଉ ହେ ଇଶ୍ରାୟେଲର ବଂଶର ଗୋଷ୍ଠୀସବୁ, ସଦାପ୍ରଭୁଙ୍କର ବାକ୍ଯ ଶୁଣ।

5 ସଦାପ୍ରଭୁ ଏହି କଥା କହନ୍ତି, ତୁମ୍ଭର ପୂର୍ବପୁରୁଷଗଣ ଆମ୍ଭଠା ରେ କେଉଁ ଅନ୍ଯାଯ ଦେଖିଲେ ଯେ ସମାନେେ ଆମ୍ଭଠାରୁ ଦୂ ରଇେ ୟାଇଅଛନ୍ତି ଓ ଅସାର ଦବେତାମାନଙ୍କର ପଶ୍ଚାଦ୍ ଗମନ କରି ଅସାର ହାଇେଅଛନ୍ତି ?

7 ପୁଣି ସଦାପ୍ରଭୁ କହନ୍ତି, ମୁଁ ତୁମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କୁ ଏକ ଉର୍ବର ଦେଶକୁ ଆଣିଲି, ଯେଉଁଠା ରେ ତୁମ୍ଭମାନେେ ଅତି ଉତ୍ତମ ଖାଦ୍ୟ ଓ ଫଳ ଭୋଜନ କରିବ। ମାତ୍ର ତୁମ୍ଭମାନେେ ପ୍ରବେଶ କଲାପ ରେ ମାେ ଦେଶକୁ 'ଅଶୁଚି' ଓ ମାରେବିରୁଦ୍ଧାଚରଣ କର।

8 ଯାଜକମାନେ କହିଲେ ନାହିଁ ଯେ, 'ସଦାପ୍ରଭୁ କାହାଁନ୍ତି,' ଆଉ ଯେଉଁମାନେ ବ୍ଯବସ୍ଥା ହସ୍ତ ରେ ଧରନ୍ତି, ସମାନେେ ଆମ୍ଭକୁ ଜାଣିଲେ ନାହିଁ, ଶାସନକର୍ତ୍ତାମାନେ ମଧ୍ଯ ଆମ୍ଭ ବିରୁଦ୍ଧ ରେ ଅଧର୍ମାଚରଣ କଲେ, ଆଉ ଭବିଷ୍ଯଦବକ୍ତାମାନେ ବାଲ୍ଦବେ ନାମ ରେ ଭବିଷ୍ଯଦବାକ୍ଯ ପ୍ରଚାର କଲେ ଓ ନିଷ୍ଫଳ ବସ୍ତୁମାନଙ୍କର ପଶ୍ଚାଦଗମନ କଲେ।

9 ତେଣୁ ସଦାପ୍ରଭୁ କହନ୍ତି, ତୁମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କର ଓ ତୁମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କର ନାତି-ନାତୁଣୀମାନଙ୍କର ବିରୁଦ୍ଧ ରେ ଆମ୍ଭେ ଏକ ମକଦ୍ଦମା କରିବା।

10 ସାଗର ପାର ହାଇେ କିର୍ତ୍ତୀଯମାନଙ୍କର ଦ୍ବୀପ ସମୂହକୁ ୟାଅ। ଆଉ କଦରକେୁ ଲୋକ ପଠାଅ ଓ ଉତ୍ତମ ରୂପେ ବିବଚେନା କରି ଦେଖ, ସଠାେ ରେ କହେି ଏପରି କାର୍ୟ୍ଯ କବେେ କରିଅଛି କି ?

11 କୌଣସି ଦେଶର ଲୋକମାନେ ସମାନଙ୍କେର ଦବଗେଣଙ୍କୁ ପରିତ୍ଯାଗ କରି ଅଛନ୍ତି କି, ଯଦିଓ ସମାନେେ ମୂର୍ତ୍ତି ଥିଲେ ଏବଂ ପ୍ରକୃତ ପରମେଶ୍ବର ନୁହଁନ୍ତି ? ମାତ୍ର ମାରେ ଲୋକମାନେ ସମାନଙ୍କେର ମହିମାମଯ ପରମେଶ୍ବରଙ୍କୁ ନିଷ୍ଫଳ ବସ୍ତୁ ବଦଳ ରେ ପରିତ୍ଯାଗ କରିଛନ୍ତି, ଯାହାର ସମାନଙ୍କେୁ ପ୍ରଦାନ କରିବା ପାଇଁ କିଛି ନ ଥାଏ।

12 ହେ ସ୍ବର୍ଗ, ଚକିତ ଓ ଭୟ ରେ କମ୍ପିତ ହୁଅ। ସଦାପ୍ରଭୁ ଏହା କହିଲେ।

13 କାରଣ ଆମ୍ଭର ଲୋକମାନେ ଦୁଇଟି ପାପ କରିଅଛନ୍ତି। ପ୍ରଥମତଃ ସମାନେେ ମାେତେ ପରିତ୍ଯାଗ କରିଛନ୍ତି ଯଦିଓ ମୁଁ ଏକ ଜୀବନଦାଯିନୀ ନିର୍ଝର ଅଟେ ଓ ଦ୍ବିତୀୟ ରେ ନିଜ ପାଇଁ ସମାନେେ ବହୁ ଜଳକୁଣ୍ଡ ଖାେଳିଛନ୍ତି। ମାତ୍ର ସହେି ଭଙ୍ଗା ଜଳକୁଣ୍ଡ ସବୁ ଜଳ ରଖିପାରନ୍ତି ନାହିଁ।

14 ଇଶ୍ରାୟେଲୀୟମାନେ କ'ଣ କ୍ରୀତଦାସ ? ସମାନେେ କ'ଣ ଆଜନ୍ମ କିଙ୍କର ? ତବେେ ସମାନେେ କାହିଁକି ଲୁଣ୍ଠିତ ଦ୍ରବ୍ଯ ସ୍ବରୂପ ହାଇେଅଛନ୍ତି ?

15 ୟୁବା ସିଂହାସନ ତାହା ଉପ ରେ ଗର୍ଜନ ଓ ହୁଙ୍କାର କରିଅଛନ୍ତି। ସମାନେେ ତାହାର ଦେଶସବୁ ଧ୍ବଂସ କରିଅଛନ୍ତି। ତାହାର ନଗରଗୁଡ଼ିକ ଦଗ୍ଧ କରିଛନ୍ତି ଓ ତାହାକୁ ଜନଶୂନ୍ଯ କରିଛନ୍ତି।

16 ଅଧିକନ୍ତୁ ନୋଫର ଓ ତଫନ ହଷେର ସନ୍ତାନଗଣ ତୁମ୍ଭ ମସ୍ତକର ମୁକୁଟ ଭାଙ୍ଗି ପକାଇ ଅଛନ୍ତି।

17 ଏସବୁ ଦୁଃଖ ତୁମ୍ଭ ନିଜ ଦୋଷରୁ ଘଟିଅଛି। କାରଣ ପରମେଶ୍ବର ତୁମ୍ଭର ସଦାପ୍ରଭୁ ତୁମ୍ଭକୁ ଠିକ୍ ପଥରେ ନବୋ ବେଳେ ତୁମ୍ଭେ ତାହାଙ୍କୁ ପରିତ୍ଯାଗ କରିଅଛ।

18 ଆଉ ଏବେ ଶୀହାରରେ ଜଳପାନ କରିବାକୁ ତୁମ୍ଭେ ମିଶରର ପଥରେ କାହିଁକି ଯାଉଅଛ ? ଅଥବା ଫରାତ୍ ନଦୀର ଜଳପାନ ନିମନ୍ତେ ତୁମ୍ଭେ ଅଶୂରର ପଥରେ କାହିଁକି ଯାଉଅଛ ?

19 ତୁମ୍ଭ ନିଜର ଦୁଷ୍କର୍ମ ତୁମ୍ଭକୁ ଶାସ୍ତି ଦବେ। ଓ ତୁମ୍ଭର ବିପଥଗାମୀତ୍ବ ତୁମ୍ଭକୁ ଶିକ୍ଷା ଦବେ। ତୁମ୍ଭେ ଉତ୍ତମ ରୂପେ ବିବଚେନା କର। ତାହା ହେଲେ ତୁମ୍ଭେ ବୁଝିବ ଯେ ପରମେଶ୍ବରଙ୍କୁ ପରିତ୍ଯାଗ କରି ତୁମ୍ଭେ କି ଅପରାଧ କରିଛ। ଆମ୍ଭ ବିଷଯକ ଭୟ ତୁମ୍ଭ ମଧିଅରେ ନ ଥିବାରୁ ଯାହା ମନ୍ଦ ଓ ତିକ୍ତ ବିଷଯ ତାହା ତୁମ୍ଭେ ଜ୍ଞାତ ହେଉ ନାହଁ। ମାରେ ପ୍ରଭୁ ସୈନ୍ଯାଧିପତି ସଦାପ୍ରଭୁ ଏହା କହନ୍ତି।

20 ହେ ଯିହୁଦା, ବହୁବର୍ଷ ପୂର୍ବେ ଆମ୍ଭେ ତୁମ୍ଭର ୟୁଆଳି ଭାଙ୍ଗି ତୁମ୍ଭର ବନ୍ଧନ ସବୁ ଚ୍ଛଦନେ କରିଛୁଁ। ଆଉ ତୁମ୍ଭେ କହିଛ, 'ଆମ୍ଭେ ତୁମ୍ଭର ଦାସତ୍ବ କର୍ମ କରିବୁ ନାହିଁ।' ପ୍ରକୃତ ରେ ତୁମ୍ଭେ ପ୍ରେତ୍ୟକକ ଉଚ୍ଚ ପର୍ବତ ଉପ ରେ ଓ ପ୍ରେତ୍ୟକକ ସବୁଜ ବୃକ୍ଷ ତଳେ ତୁମ୍ଭର ବ୍ଯଭିଚାର କରି ଚାଲିଛ।

21 ହେ ଯିହୁଦା, ମୁଁ ତୁମ୍ଭକୁ ସ୍ବତନ୍ତ୍ର ବୀଜରୁ ଉତ୍ପନ୍ନ ଏକ ଦ୍ରାକ୍ଷାଲତା କରି ରୋପଣ କରିଥିଲି। ତବେେ ତୁମ୍ଭେ କାହିଁକି ବନ୍ଯ ଦ୍ରାକ୍ଷାଲତା ହେଲ ?

22 ଯଦିଓ ତୁମ୍ଭେ ସୋଢ଼ା ରେ ନିଜକୁ ଧୌତ କରିଅଛ ଓ ବହୁତ ସାବୁନ ବ୍ଯବହାର କରିଛ, ତଥାପି ତୁମ୍ଭର ଦୋଷ ଆମ୍ଭ ଦୃଷ୍ଟି ରେ କ୍ଷାରିତ ନ ହାଇେ ସହେିପରି ରହିଅଛି। ଏହା ପ୍ରଭୁ ସଦାପ୍ରଭୁ କହନ୍ତି।

23 ପୁଣି ହେ ଯିହୁଦା, ତୁମ୍ଭେ କିପରି କହିପାରିବ ଯେ, 'ଆମ୍ଭେ ଅଶୁଚି ହାଇେ ନାହୁଁ ଓ ବାଲ୍ଦବଗେଣର ପଶ୍ଚାଦଗାମୀ ହାଇେ ନାହୁଁ ?' ଉପତ୍ୟକା ରେ ତୁମ୍ଭେ ଯାହାସବୁ କରିଅଛ ଚିନ୍ତାକର। ତୁମ୍ଭେ ଆପଣା ପଥରେ ଭ୍ରମଣକାରିଣୀ ଦ୍ରୁତଗାମିନୀ ଓଟ ସଦୃଶ।

24 ଆଉ ତୁମ୍ଭେ ପ୍ରାନ୍ତର ରେ ବାସ କରୁଥିବା ବନ୍ଯ ଗର୍ଦ୍ଦଭୀ ପରି ଅଟ। ସେ ନିଜର ଋତୁ ସମୟରେ ବାଯୁ ଆଘ୍ରାଣ କରେ। କିଏ ତା'ର କାମ ଲିପ୍ସାରୁ ଅବରୋଧ କରିପାରିବେ ? ତାହାର ଅନ୍ବଷେଣକାରୀମାନଙ୍କର ଆପଣାମାନଙ୍କ କ୍ଲାନ୍ତ କରିବାର ଦରକାର ନାହିଁ। ସମାନେେ ତାଙ୍କର ନିଯମିତ ମାସ ରେ ତାକୁ ସହଜ ରେ ପାଇପାରିବେ।

25 ହେ ୟିହୁଦୀ, ତୁମ୍ଭେ ନିଶ୍ଚିତ ଯେ, ସେ ଦବଗେଣଙ୍କ ପଶ୍ଚାଦଗମନରୁ ନିବୃତ୍ତ ହବୋ ଉଚିତ୍ ଓ ସେ ଦବଗେଣଙ୍କ ନିମନ୍ତେ ନିଜର କଣ୍ଠ ଶୁଷ୍କ କରିବା ଉଚିତ୍ ନୁହେଁ। ମାତ୍ର ତୁମ୍ଭେ କହିଲ, 'ଆଉ ଦରକାର ନାହିଁ, କାରଣ ଆମ୍ଭେ ସହେି ବିଦେଶୀଯ ଦବଗେଣଙ୍କୁ ପୂଜା କରିଅଛୁ ଓ ସମାନଙ୍କେର ପଶ୍ଚାଦଗାମୀ ହବେୁ, ସମାନଙ୍କେୁ ଆମ୍ଭେ ଛାଡ଼ିବୁ ନାହିଁ।'

26 ଚୋର ଧରାପଡ଼ିଲେ ଯେପରି ଲଜ୍ଜିତ ହୁଏ, ସହେିପରି ଇଶ୍ରାୟେଲ ବଂଶ, ସମାନଙ୍କେର ରାଜଗଣ, ସମାନଙ୍କେର ଅଧିପତିଗଣ, ସମାନଙ୍କେର ଯାଜକଗଣ ଓ ସମାନଙ୍କେର ଭବିଷ୍ଯଦବକ୍ତାଗଣ ସମସ୍ତେ ଲଜ୍ଜିତ ହାଇେଅଛନ୍ତି।

27 ସମାନେେ ଏକ କାଠ ମୁଣ୍ଡାକୁ କହନ୍ତି, ତୁମ୍ଭେ ଆମ୍ଭର ପିତା' ଓ ଖଣ୍ଡେ ପଥରକୁ କହନ୍ତି, 'ତୁମ୍ଭେ ଆମ୍ଭକୁ ଜନ୍ମ କରିଅଛ।' ସମାନେେ ସେଥିପାଇଁ ଲଜ୍ଜିତ ହବେେ। ପୁଣି ସମାନେେ ଆମ୍ଭ ଆଡ଼କୁ ମୁଖ ନ କରି, ଆମ୍ଭ ଆଡ଼କୁ ପଛପଟ କରିଅଛନ୍ତି। ମାତ୍ର ବିପଦ ସମୟରେ ଯିହୁଦାର ଲୋକମାନେ କହିବେ, 'ତୁମ୍ଭେ ଆସ, ଆମ୍ଭମାନଙ୍କୁ ଉଦ୍ଧାର କର।'

28 ମାତ୍ର ତୁମ୍ଭମାନେେ ନିଜପାଇଁ ଯେଉଁ ପ୍ରତିମାଗୁଡ଼ିକ ନିର୍ମାଣ କରିଅଛ, ସମାନେେ କାହାନ୍ତି ? ସମାନେେ ଆସନ୍ତୁ ଓ ଯଦି ପାରନ୍ତି ତବେେ ତୁମ୍ଭେ ବିପଦ ସମୟରେ ତୁମ୍ଭକୁ ଉଦ୍ଧାର କରନ୍ତୁ। କାରଣ ହେ ଯିହୁଦା ତୁମ୍ଭ ନଗରର ସଂଖ୍ଯାନୁସା ରେ ତୁମ୍ଭର ଦବେତାମାନେ ଅଛନ୍ତି।

29 ତୁମ୍ଭମାନେେ କାହିଁକି ଆମ୍ଭ ସଙ୍ଗେ ବିବାଦ କରୁଛ ? ତୁମ୍ଭେ ସମସ୍ତେ ଆମ୍ଭ ବିରୁଦ୍ଧ ରେ ପାପ କରିଅଛ। ଏହା ସଦାପ୍ରଭୁ କହନ୍ତି।

30 ଆମ୍ଭେ ବୃଥା ରେ ତୁମ୍ଭ ସନ୍ତାନଗଣଙ୍କୁ ଦଣ୍ଡ ଦଇେଅଛୁ। ମାତ୍ର ଏହାର ଫଳ କିଛି ହେଲା ନାହିଁ। କାରଣ ତୁମ୍ଭମାନେେ ଠିକ୍ ବାଟକୁ ଫରେିଲ ନାହିଁ। ତୁମ୍ଭମାନେେ ତୁମ୍ଭ ଖଡ୍ଗ ରେ ତୁମ୍ଭର ଭବିଷ୍ଯଦବକ୍ତାଗଣଙ୍କୁ ହତ୍ଯା କରିଅଛ। ଆଉ ଭୟଙ୍କର ସିଂହ ତୁଲ୍ଯ ସମାନଙ୍କେୁ ଗ୍ରାସ କରିଅଛ।

31 ହେ ବର୍ତ୍ତମାନ ସମୟର ଲୋକମାନେ, ତୁମ୍ଭମାନେେ ସଦାପ୍ରଭୁଙ୍କ ବାକ୍ଯପ୍ରତି ଧ୍ଯାନ ଦିଅ। ଆମ୍ଭେ କ'ଣ ଇଶ୍ରାୟେଲ ପ୍ରତି ପ୍ରାନ୍ତରସ୍ବରୂପ କିଅବା ନିବିଡ଼ ଅନ୍ଧକାରମଯ ଦେଶ ସ୍ବରୂପ ହାଇେଅଛୁ ? ଆମ୍ଭର ଲୋକମାନେ କାହିଁକି କହୁଛନ୍ତି, 'ଆମ୍ଭମାନେେ ବନ୍ଧନମୁକ୍ତ ହାଇେଅଛୁ, ଆମ୍ଭମାନେେ ଆଉ ତୁମ୍ଭ ନିକଟକୁ ଆସିବୁ ନାହିଁ ?'

32 ଜଣେ ୟୁବତୀ କ'ଣ ନିଜର ଅଳଙ୍କାରକୁ ଭୁଲିପା ରେ ? ଜଣେ କନ୍ଯା କ'ଣ ତା'ର ପୋଷାକକୁ ଭୁଲି ପାରିବ ? କିନ୍ତୁ ମାରେ ଲୋକମାନେ ମାେତେ ଅସଂଖ୍ଯ ଥର ପାଶୋରି ଅଛନ୍ତି।

33 ହେ ଯିହୁଦା, ତୁମ୍ଭେ ତୁମ୍ଭ ପ୍ ରମେିକମାନଙ୍କୁ ଖାଜେିବ ରେ ନିପୁଣା। ଏପରିକି ତୁମ୍ଭେ ଦୁଷ୍ଟା ସ୍ତ୍ରୀଲୋକମାନଙ୍କୁ କିପରି ଏହା କରିବାକୁ ହୁଏ ଶିକ୍ଷା ଦେଲେ।

34 ତୁମ୍ଭ ହସ୍ତ ରେ ଦରିଦ୍ର ନିର୍ଦ୍ ଦୋଷ ପ୍ରାଣର ରକ୍ତ ଦଖାୟୋଏ। ଏହି ରକ୍ତ ସିନ୍ଧିକାଟିବା କୌଣସି ଲୁଣ୍ଠନକାରୀର ନୁହେଁ। ତୁମ୍ଭେ ବିନାକାରଣ ରେ ରକ୍ତପାତ କରିଛ।

35 ତୁମ୍ଭେ କହିବାକୁ ଲାଗୁଛ, 'ଆମ୍ଭେ ନିରୀହ ଏବଂ ଆମ୍ଭେ ନିଶ୍ଚିତ ଯେ, ପରମେଶ୍ବର ତାଙ୍କର କୋର୍ଧକୁ ଆମଠାରୁ ଦୂ ରଇେ ନବେେ।' ଏହା ତୁମ୍ଭକୁ କହିବାକୁ ଦିଅ, ଆମ୍ଭେ ତୁମ୍ଭର ବିଚାର କରିବା କାରଣ ତୁମ୍ଭେ କହୁଛ, 'ଆମ୍ଭେ ନିର୍ଦ୍ ଦୋଷୀ।'

36 ତୁମ୍ଭେ କାହିଁକି ଆପଣା ମନ ପରିବର୍ତ୍ତନ କରିଚାଲିଛ, ଏତେ ଅବ ହଳେିତ ଭାବରେ ? ତୁମ୍ଭେ ଅଶୂରର ବିଷଯ ରେ ଯେପରି ଲଜ୍ଜିତା ହାଇେଥିଲ, ସହେିପରି ମିଶରର ବିଷଯ ରେ ଲଜ୍ଜିତା ହବେ।

37 ଆଉ ତୁମ୍ଭେ ମିଶରରୁ ମଧ୍ଯ ବାହାରି ୟିବ ଓ ଲଜ୍ଜ୍ଯା ରେ ତୁମ୍ଭେ ଆପଣା ମୁହଁ ଲୁଚାଇବ, କାରଣ ସଦାପ୍ରଭୁ ତୁମ୍ଭର ନିର୍ଭର କରୁଥିବା ଲୋକମାନଙ୍କୁ ପ୍ରତ୍ଯାଖ୍ଯାନ କରିଅଛନ୍ତି। ତୁମ୍ଭମାନେେ ସମାନଙ୍କେ ସାହାୟ୍ଯ ଦ୍ବାରା ଉନ୍ନତି କରିପାରିବ ନାହିଁ।

1 Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

2 Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the Lord; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love of thine espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.

3 Israel was holiness unto the Lord, and the firstfruits of his increase: all that devour him shall offend; evil shall come upon them, saith the Lord.

4 Hear ye the word of the Lord, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel:

5 Thus saith the Lord, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?

6 Neither said they, Where is the Lord that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought, and of the shadow of death, through a land that no man passed through, and where no man dwelt?

7 And I brought you into a plentiful country, to eat the fruit thereof and the goodness thereof; but when ye entered, ye defiled my land, and made mine heritage an abomination.

8 The priests said not, Where is the Lord? and they that handle the law knew me not: the pastors also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit.

9 Wherefore I will yet plead with you, saith the Lord, and with your children’s children will I plead.

10 For pass over the isles of Chittim, and see; and send unto Kedar, and consider diligently, and see if there be such a thing.

11 Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit.

12 Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly afraid, be ye very desolate, saith the Lord.

13 For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

14 Is Israel a servant? is he a homeborn slave? why is he spoiled?

15 The young lions roared upon him, and yelled, and they made his land waste: his cities are burned without inhabitant.

16 Also the children of Noph and Tahapanes have broken the crown of thy head.

17 Hast thou not procured this unto thyself, in that thou hast forsaken the Lord thy God, when he led thee by the way?

18 And now what hast thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Sihor? or what hast thou to do in the way of Assyria, to drink the waters of the river?

19 Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the Lord thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord God of hosts.

20 For of old time I have broken thy yoke, and burst thy bands; and thou saidst, I will not transgress; when upon every high hill and under every green tree thou wanderest, playing the harlot.

21 Yet I had planted thee a noble vine, wholly a right seed: how then art thou turned into the degenerate plant of a strange vine unto me?

22 For though thou wash thee with nitre, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord God.

23 How canst thou say, I am not polluted, I have not gone after Baalim? see thy way in the valley, know what thou hast done: thou art a swift dromedary traversing her ways;

24 A wild ass used to the wilderness, that snuffeth up the wind at her pleasure; in her occasion who can turn her away? all they that seek her will not weary themselves; in her month they shall find her.

25 Withhold thy foot from being unshod, and thy throat from thirst: but thou saidst, There is no hope: no; for I have loved strangers, and after them will I go.

26 As the thief is ashamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priests, and their prophets,

27 Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us.

28 But where are thy gods that thou hast made thee? let them arise, if they can save thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O Judah.

29 Wherefore will ye plead with me? ye all have transgressed against me, saith the Lord.

30 In vain have I smitten your children; they received no correction: your own sword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroying lion.

31 O generation, see ye the word of the Lord. Have I been a wilderness unto Israel? a land of darkness? wherefore say my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee?

32 Can a maid forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? yet my people have forgotten me days without number.

33 Why trimmest thou thy way to seek love? therefore hast thou also taught the wicked ones thy ways.

34 Also in thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but upon all these.

35 Yet thou sayest, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will plead with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned.

36 Why gaddest thou about so much to change thy way? thou also shalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wast ashamed of Assyria.

37 Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thine hands upon thine head: for the Lord hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not prosper in them.
