யோவான் அவருக்குத் தடை செய்து: நான் உம்மாலே ஞானஸ்நானம் பெறவேண்டியதாயிருக்க, நீர் என்னிடத்தில் வரலாமா என்றான்.

ஆனால் யோவானோ இயேசுவுக்குத் தான் ஞானஸ்நானம் கொடுக்குமளவுக்கு மேன்மையானவன் அல்ல என்று அவரைத் தடுக்க முயன்றான். எனவே யோவான் இயேசுவிடம், “நீர் என்னிடம் ஞானஸ்நானம் பெறலாகுமோ? நான்தான் உம்மிடம் ஞானஸ்நானம் பெறவேண்டும்” என்றான்.
