ಆದರೆ ಮೊದಲು ಆ ಪಟ್ಟಣಕ್ಕೆ ಲಯಿಷೆಂಬ ಹೆಸರು ಇತ್ತು. ಆಗ ದಾನನ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಆ ಕೆತ್ತಿದ ವಿಗ್ರಹವನ್ನು ತಮಗೆ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿಕೊಂಡರು. ಮನಸ್ಸೆಯ ಮೊಮ್ಮಗನೂ ಗೆರ್ಷೋಮನ ಮಗನೂ ಯೋನಾ ತಾನನೂ ಅವನ ಮಕ್ಕಳೂ ಆ ದೇಶದವರು ಸೆರೆಯಾಗಿ ಒಯ್ಯಲ್ಪಡುವ ದಿವಸದ ವರೆಗೂ ದಾನನ ಗೋತ್ರದ ವರಿಗೆ ಯಾಜಕರಾಗಿದ್ದರು.

ಫಿಲಿಷ್ಟಿ ಯರು ಇಸ್ರಾಯೇಲಿಗೆ ಎದುರಾಗಿ ವ್ಯೂಹವನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿ ಯುದ್ಧ ಮಾಡಿದಾಗ ಇಸ್ರಾಯೇಲ್ಯರು ಫಿಲಿಷ್ಟಿಯರ ಮುಂದೆ ಹೊಡೆಯಲ್ಪಟ್ಟರು. ಹೇಗಂದರೆ, ಫಿಲಿಷ್ಟಿಯರು ಯುದ್ಧರಂಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚುಕಡಿಮೆ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಸಾವಿರ ಜನರನ್ನು ಕೊಂದುಹಾಕಿದರು.

ಈ ವಿಾಕ ಎಂಬ ಮನುಷ್ಯನಿಗೆ ದೇವರುಗಳ ಮನೆ ಇದ್ದದರಿಂದ ಅವನು ಒಂದು ಏಫೋದನ್ನೂ ಪ್ರತಿಮೆಗಳನ್ನೂ ಮಾಡಿ ತನ್ನ ಕುಮಾರರಲ್ಲಿ ಒಬ್ಬನನ್ನು ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠೆಮಾಡಿದನು. ಅವನು ಇವನಿಗೆ ಯಾಜಕ ನಾದನು.

ಅವನು ಆ ಸಾವಿರದ ನೂರು ರೂಪಾಯಿಗಳಷ್ಟು ಬೆಳ್ಳಿಯನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ತಾಯಿಗೆ ತಿರಿಗಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಾಗ ಅವನ ತಾಯಿ--ನನ್ನ ಮಗನ ನಿಮಿತ್ತ ಕೆತ್ತಿದ ವಿಗ್ರಹವನ್ನೂ ಎರಕದ ವಿಗ್ರಹವನ್ನೂ ಮಾಡುವದಕ್ಕೆ ನಾನು ನನ್ನ ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಈ ಬೆಳ್ಳಿಯನ್ನು ಕರ್ತನಿಗೆ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಿಸಿದೆನು; ಆದದರಿಂದ ನಾನು ಅದನ್ನು ನಿನಗೆ ತಿರಿಗಿ ಕೊಡುವೆನು ಅಂದಳು.

ಇಸ್ರಾಯೇಲ್ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ತಿರಿಗಿ ಕರ್ತನ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಟ್ಟದ್ದನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಕರ್ತನು ಅವರನ್ನು ನಾಲ್ವತ್ತು ವರುಷದ ವರೆಗೆ ಫಿಲಿಷ್ಟಿಯರ ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಪ್ಪಿಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟನು.

ನಿನ್ನ ದೇವರಾದ ಕರ್ತನ ಮುಂದೆ ಕೆಟ್ಟದ್ದನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿ ಆತನ ಒಡಂಬಡಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ವಿಾರಿ ಬಿಟ್ಟು
ಯಾಜಕಕಾಂಡ 26:1
ನೀವು ನಿಮಗಾಗಿ ವಿಗ್ರಹಗಳನ್ನಾಗಲಿ ಕೆತ್ತಿದ ಪ್ರತಿಮೆಯನ್ನಾಗಲಿ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಡಿರಿ; ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸುವ ಪ್ರತಿಮೆಯನ್ನಾಗಲಿ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಡಿರಿ. ಕಲ್ಲಿನ ವಿಗ್ರಹಗಳನ್ನಾಗಲಿ ನಿಮ್ಮ ದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿಟ್ಟು ಕೊಂಡು ಅವುಗಳಿಗೆ ಅಡ್ಡ ಬೀಳಬೇಡಿರಿ. ನಿಮ್ಮ ದೇವರಾಗಿರುವ ಕರ್ತನು ನಾನೇ.
