பூர்வத்திலே லாயீஸ் என்னும் பேர் கொண்டிருந்த அந்தப் பட்டணத்திற்கு இஸ்ரவேலுக்குப் பிறந்த தங்கள் தகப்பனாகிய தாணுடைய நாமத்தின்படியே தாண் என்று பேரிட்டார்கள்.

தாண் ஜனங்கள் அந்நகரத்திற்கு ஒரு புதிய பெயரிட்டனர். அந்நகரம் லாயீஸ் என்னும் பெயர் கொண்டது. அவர்கள் அதைத் தாண் என்று மாற்றினார்கள். இஸ்ரவேலின் மகன்களில் ஒருவனும், தங்கள் முற்பிதாவுமாகிய தாணின் பெயரால் அந்நகரை அழைத்தனர்.
