શમુએલે તેલનું શીગડું લઈને તેનો તેના ભાઈઓના દેખતાં અભિષેક કર્યો. પછી યહોવાના આત્માંએ દાઉદમાં સંચાર કર્યો અને તે દિવસથી તેના ભેગો રહ્યો. શમુએલ પછી તેની જગ્યાએ પાછો ગયો.
