યોનાથાન ઘાટીમાં થઈને પલિસ્તીઓની છાવણીમાં જવાની યોજના કરતો હતો. ધાટીની બન્ને બાજુએ મોટા ખડકો હતા. આ ખડકોના નામ બોસેસ અને સેનેહ હતા.

તેણે ઇસ્રાએલમાંથી 3,000 સૈનિકોની ભરતી કરી. તેમાંના 2,000 પોતાની સાથે બેથેલ પહાડી દેશમાં મિખ્માંશમાં રાખ્યા. જયારે બાકીના હજારનું સૈન્ય શાઉલનો પુત્ર યોનાથાનની સાથે બિન્યામીનના પ્રદેશના ગિબયાહમાં રાખ્યું. બાકીના સૈનિકોને શાઉલે પોતપોતાને ઘેર મોકલી દીધા.

પલિસ્તીઓ ઇસ્રાએલ ઉપર હુમલો કરવા માંટે ભેગા થયા. તેમની પાસે 3,000 રથ, 6,000 ઘોડેસ્વાર અને દરિયાકાંઠાની રેતીની જેમ અગણિત પાયદળ હતું. તેમણે બેથ આવેનની પૂર્વમાં મિખ્માંશ જઈને છાવણી નાખી.
