Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding angry, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men.

அப்பொழுது ஏரோது தான் சாஸ்திரிகளால் ஏமாற்றப்பட்டதைக் கண்டு, மிகுந்த கோபமடைந்து, ஆட்களை அனுப்பி, தான் சாஸ்திரிகளிடத்தில் திட்டமாக விசாரித்த காலத்தின்படியே, பெத்லகேமிலும் அதின் எல்லா எல்லைகளிலுமிருந்த இரண்டு வயதுக்குட்பட்ட எல்லா ஆண் பிள்ளைகளையும் கொலைசெய்தான்.

ஞானிகள் தன்னைச் சந்திக்காமல் சென்றுவிட்டதை அறிந்த ஏரோது மிகுந்த கோபமுற்றான். குழந்தை பிறந்த காலத்தை ஏரோது ஞானிகளிடமிருந்து அறிந்திருந்தான். இதற்குள் இரண்டு வருடங்களாகி இருந்தன. எனவே, பெத்லகேமிலும் அதைச் சுற்றியுள்ள பகுதிகளிலும் உள்ள எல்லா ஆண் குழந்தைகளையும் கொல்ல ஏரோது ஆணையிட்டான். ஆகவே, இரண்டும் அதற்குக் குறைவான வயதுடையதுமாகிய எல்லா ஆண் குழந்தைகளையும் கொன்றுவிட ஆணையிட்டான்.
