When Mordecai perceived all that was done, Mordecai rent his clothes, and put on sackcloth with ashes, and went out into the midst of the city, and cried with a loud and a bitter cry;

நடந்த அனைத்தையும் மொர்தெகாய் கேள்விப்பட்டான். யூதர்களுக்கு எதிரான அரசனது கட்டளையைக் கேட்டதும் அவன் தனது ஆடையைக் கிழித்தான். துக்கத்திற்கு அடையாளமான ஆடையை அணிந்து தலையில் சாம்பலை போட்டுக்கொண்டான். பிறகு அவன் நகரத்திற்குள் உரத்தக்குரலில் அழுதவண்ணம் சென்றான்.
