When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see all of you to it.

கலவரம் அதிகமாகிறதேயல்லாமல் தன் முயற்சியினாலே பலன் இல்லையென்று பிலாத்து பார்த்து, தண்ணீரை அள்ளி, மக்களுக்கு முன்பாக கைகளைக் கழுவி: இந்த நீதிமானுடைய இரத்தப்பழிக்கு நான் குற்றமற்றவன், நீங்களே பார்த்துக்கொள்ளுங்கள் என்றான்.

மக்களை மாற்றத் தன்னால் ஏதும் செய்ய முடியாது என்பதைப் பிலாத்து கண்டான். மேலும் மக்கள் பொறுமையிழப்பதையும் பிலாத்து கவனித்தான். ஆகவே தண்ணீரை எடுத்து மக்கள் எல்லோரும் காணுமாறு தன் கைகளைக் கழுவினான். பின்பு, “இவரது மரணத்திற்கு நான் பொறுப்பல்ல. நீங்களே அதைச் செய்கிறீர்கள்” என்று பிலாத்து கூறினான்.
